CD_9.PROBLEMS October 21, 1994 H. Kent Hills INTRODUCTION This is a current list of the known problems and solutions encountered in using the CDAW-9/PROMIS Data Base Prototype CD-ROM. This document, B44508 in NSSDC's Technical Reference File, will be maintained in digital format by NSSDC, and will be kept up to date as additional information becomes available. A paper copy will be distributed with the CD-ROMs. Although the original documentation indicated a different address for an electronic copy of these information updates, they will be available for copy as follows: Anonymous ftp from node nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov as file [space_physics.cdaw.cdrom]cd_9.problems. DECnet copy from NSSDCA::ANON_DIR:[SPACE_PHYSICS.CDAW.CDROM]CD_9.PROBLEMS. A "latest information" file about CDAW-9 and the CDAW-9 CD-ROM will also be kept up to date in this same directory, with the filename CD_9.LATEST_INFO. We ask users that if they encounter problems with this CD-ROM, to please contact: H. There is an uncatalogued CDF named ZRG which for Event B does not have the whole CDAW time period. ZRG is cataloged in our on-line catalogs, although its variable list is blank. The reason is unknown. However, our browser software was able to retrieve data from it for event B. The CDF runs from April 2, 1986 at 1800 to April 3 at 1000, but there is mostly (or completely) fill data starting 1 minute before April 3 and continuing to the end of the CDF. Sampling a relatively small fraction of the different stations indicated that all had fill data for the numerous points checked on April 3. The original data are available from NGDC in Boulder (for a fee). The data for ZRG was obtained from their ground magnetic station data, from a collection they call RGON stations (hence our name: Z for ground magnetic, and RG from RGON). Our contact to obtain the data was Herb Kroehl, whose phone number is (303) 497-6121, and e-mail is hkroehl@ngdc.noaa.gov. 2. The ZSSR CDF is listed in the catalog as being for events A and B, but data in the CDF for event B is really for event A. (The CDF listed under event A is correct.) ZSSR for event B is contained correctly in our on-line data directory for event B. 3. The CDF named XISY is not in the printed catalogue but is on the on-CD catalog. However, XISY under EventB might not be readable (on a PC) with CDFLIST and might come up as 'corrupted'. This CDF (XISY) is in our on-line catalog and data directory. The CDF is structured as an array of size 4 (to accomodate certain variables). There are 19 variables and 28,800 records in this CDF. It can be accessed from our on-line CDAW system for use as needed, or you can use the Data Manipulation feature to copy the CDF to your machine. It can also be copied by DECnet copy or ftp. The directory listing for XISYB is given below. Note that these files are in VAX representation, and that the CDF software must have all 20 of the files, even if certain files have little or no data in them. The CDF utilities provide routines for converting from this multi-file format to a single-file format, and for converting among various machine representations. These comments also apply to accessing ZSSR, too.
